Client: Hi, I’m about to get on a plane and won’t be in touch the rest of the day. There’s a new project that I’ve got someone handling, they’ll call later on and let you know what’s needed. They need to check with some guys over the weekend to get all our ducks in a row, but then we should be…
I love this Blog so much
I’m trying to come up with new things to draw, ones that weigh less on me drawing superheroes and more on me drawing people and environments
My opinion on current Marvel comics
To put it simply, I’m kinda getting tired with Marvel. That is, the regular 616 Marvel were currently in. I feel as though it’s gone on long enough; it’s time to kill it. DC had a genius moment with their reboot, it gave everyone a chance to breath and start again fresh. Marvel of course couldn’t do it so soon lest they look like complete idea thieves. But I suggest they do it soon. A second thing that has been bothering me is the fact that all the series’ relate to the same universe, I understand the benefits and I am aware of the Ultimate universe but even in that universe all the Ultimate titles relate to the Ultimate universe. Obvious, I know. But if we look at DC we find like 4 current batman titles, not counting his roles in other comics like Justice League or Catwoman, that have NOTHING to do with each other. They’re all their own separate universe with the same basic features. I would like to see some Marvel comics that are on their own. I know there are some but there aren’t enough for their title characters, they’re usually smaller, lesser know characters.
So in short, Marvel, model yourself the way DC has and I’ll be back in board
An Attempt
I’m gonna be trying to post more things on this blog
it’ll be a collection of my thoughts and that jazz
mostly about comics- I won’t lie
I’ll try using my other blog to post more art as well
Women on comics
Honestly it bugs me a little more than it should with the way women cast comics. I understand where they stand but one of the bigger arguments is that comics set unrealistic precedents for women. With that being said I usually have to interject and tell them, I can look at a Batman book for the rest of my life, but I know I’ll never look like him; it’s unrealistic. But I don’t really let that bother me, I’m sure a woman would prefer me to be of a Spider-man shape and equally as muscular but it’s unrealistic. There aren’t only impossibly shapely women in comics so it’s annoying to not only hear them generalize but to hear them complain incessantly.
Comic Book Stereotypes
It’s weird, I wonder if anyone else has thought about it. In comics there are only so many different types of characters and they’re all so basic it seems. There’s always the dead person, now this person is usually a family member that the main has a special relationship with but every now and then it branches out to someone else they hold dear. This is almost always part of their origin except in the odd occurrence where they are either “The Chosen One” or they’ve had some odd inexplicable revelation that causes them to see the light and become hero. It doesn’t really get more complicated than that.
From there you have the different characters they turn into. To name a few clichés: there’s the martial artist, there’s the force of nature, the wise cracking teen, the dark serious one, positive optimist and the angry antihero. Now those ranged from personalities to power types. If you look at a series of a wild variety of characters see it better. My personal favorite example is the parallels between the X-men, the Justice League, and the Avengers. The leader is always the one who’s disliked; Superman, Cyclops, Captain America- they’re always the least interesting and most disliked. The bold strong character is then backed up by their secondary, which in this case is actually a character created afterward. Superman has Batman, Cyclops has Wolverine and Capt has Hulk/Ironman. These characters are usually the most popular on the team. These secondary characters are usually the foil to the leader and leave readers itching for a fight between them and the leader; look at Schism, Civil War or the numerous times that Batman and Superman have faced off.
It’s uncanny.
You can go on forever
There’s are parallels in almost every character if you look at them. My examples really don’t go into it at all, these don’t even scratch the surface of it.
I’m craving something new with superheroes, Marvel and DC aren’t doing it for me anymore. Image comics and indie comics seem like they might be the only thing doing something different. I’m not calling them perfect or knocking Marvel or DC Comics but I feel like I need something new. Maybe to see all comics do complete reboots but I don’t like the stories that have been going on for years and haven’t moved. Okay I’m just asking for comics to change; what a fruitless endeavor.
